It’s one of life’s paradoxes. On the one hand, we prefer to hang out with our kind of people, not those other groups with their strange symbols, rituals, beliefs and behaviour. On the other hand, if we just stick to ourselves, we’ll go extinct from inbreeding. So – and here’s the paradox – we need to mingle (and more) with people with whom we are less comfortable, in order to survive for the longer term.
